Engineering Supply Chain Innovation

Overview

Early in the development of products in sectors such as aerospace and rail, system level decisions are made on key sub-systems and whether specific sub-systems are designed and/or made in-house or by suppliers. These decisions fix the structure of the supply chain through which products are realised and so impact supply chain performance.

Our research in this area is exploring the feasibility of software tools that enable the incorporation of supply chain perspectives in early design decisions. For example, we are working on the development of an interface for an engineering simulation package to enable the visualisation of the implications of design alternatives on supply chain performance based on a product system architecture and associated make-buy scenario.
